I first discovered yoga in the fall of 2010. At the time I was an exchange student in Boise, Idaho. I was taking kick-boxing classes at my local YMCA, and the class right after mine was pilo-yoga (a combination of pilates and yoga). I got interested in that class so decided to start taking both classes consecutively. At the time I was only interested in burning as many calories as I could. But it became rapidly clear after only a few classes that the yoga classes had more than just the benefit of burning calories. I was starting to experience a state of mental calm and it helped me deal with every-day stress.
During my exchange year in 2010, my eating disorder peaked. I was restricting, binging and then going to the gym to ‘burn’ it back off. Yoga helped me deal with my negative thought patterns and healed my relationship to my body. I was able to leave behind my perfectionism and live a more mindful life.
After getting back home (to the lovely Belgium), I started following online classes and classes at my local yoga studio. In the fall of 2015, I decided to travel to India for a month to complete my 200hr YTT at Trimurti, a yoga school in Goa.
I first started teaching part-time, but after a few months my love for teaching took over and I decided to follow my heart. I quit my other job as an assistant and took the plunge as a full-time yoga teacher. There’s not a day I regret this decision.
